This uses the IRS Publication 15-T Percentage Method (Worksheet 1A): your gross pay less pre-tax deductions is annualized, the filing-status standard deduction ($16,100 for single) is subtracted, federal brackets are applied, dependent credits ($2,200/dependent for 2026) reduce the result, and the total is divided by your number of pay periods. Actual withholding may differ slightly if your W-4 has Step 2 (multiple jobs) checked or extra Step 4 amounts.

Understanding Your 2026 Paycheck

Federal Income Tax Withholding

Employers use IRS Publication 15-T to determine federal withholding. The Percentage Method annualizes your pay, applies the 2026 federal brackets per IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32 (10% / 12% / 22% / 24% / 32% / 35% / 37%), subtracts the standard deduction ($16,100 single / $32,200 MFJ), and divides by your pay periods. The 2020+ Form W-4 replaced "allowances" with concrete dependent counts in Step 3 (each child under 17 reduces annual withholding by approximately $2,000-$2,200).

FICA Taxes

FICA combines Social Security and Medicare. Social Security is 6.2% on wages up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500 (per SSA Fact Sheet 2026); wages above that cap pay 0% Social Security. Medicare is 1.45% on all wages with no cap. An additional 0.9% Medicare surtax (IRC §3101(b)(2)) applies to wages above $200,000 single / $250,000 MFJ. Employers match the 6.2% + 1.45% but do NOT match the 0.9% surtax.

Pre-Tax Deductions That Reduce Your Withholding

Several deductions lower the taxable wages your employer uses for withholding. Traditional 401(k) (up to $24,500 in 2026) reduces federal/state income tax but NOT FICA. HSA ($4,400 self-only / $8,750 family in 2026) through a §125 cafeteria plan reduces income tax AND FICA, the only true triple-tax-advantaged account. Nine states levy no broad income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire (repealed its interest/dividends tax in 2025), South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington (but levies 7% on capital gains over ~$278k), and Wyoming. Several states changed in 2026, Georgia cut to 4.99%, Indiana to 2.95%, Kentucky to 3.5%, North Carolina to 3.99%, Ohio collapsed to a flat 2.75%, Mississippi to 4%, Oklahoma to 3-bracket / 4.5% top.
